Patients with Chronic liver disease having following signs & symptoms are usually referred for Liver transplantation

MELD > 15
CTP > 8

  • Ascites (water in the ‘tummy’)
  • Hepatic encephalopathy (Excessive sleepiness, drowsiness, mental confusion)
  • Hepatorenal syndrome (Chronic liver disease with ascites & raised Creatinine level)
  • Upper GI bleed, (Bloody vomiting or Black stools) Refractory to endoscopic management
  • Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis
  • Progressive malnutrition/Growth retardation
  • Jaundice
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma

Indication for Liver Transplant in Children

In children, the most common reason for liver transplantation is biliary atresia.
